Computers have been used in teaching for more than twenty years. But a new book says that only now are they changing education. And it predicts that a lot more is about to happen.

The book is called "Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns."

"Disruptive innovation" is a theory developed by lead author Clayton Christensen, a professor at the Harvard Business School. He says organizations almost always use new, creative technology only to continue what they already do.

The new book says the needed disruptive force in education is computer-based learning.

Michael Horn, another author of "Disrupting Class," told us about a Boston public school that he visited.Every student has a laptop computer.

One class was learning about storms.Michael Horn says the laptops made it possible to truly individualize the lessons, to divide materials by ability level and learning style. At the end, the students all took part in a discussion led by the teacher.

Computer-based learning offers a way for students to take advanced courses not offered at their school, or to retake classes they failed. It also serves those who cannot physically attend school, and students who receive home schooling or need tutoring.

Computer-based learning includes online courses.Enrollments in online courses have grown sharply. In 2007, the US had about one million enrollments, not including college courses.Students could be enrolled in more than one course, through schools or education companies.

High school students make up about 70% of the enrollments.Still, nationally, only about 1% of all high school courses last year were taught online.

But the authors of "Disrupting Class" predict it will be 10% in about six years. And their research suggests that the number will be about 50% by 2019.And Michael Horn says the future of online learning could be even greater in developing countries.

More teenagers are becoming addicted to tobacco, says the 2008 China Tobacco Control Report.

About 40 million of the country's 130 million children between 13 and 18 have tried smoking, and 15 million of them have become addicted.

Nearly 68% of them had their first whole cigarette before they reached 13, with those in big cities doing so at an even younger age.

Yang Gonghuan, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, blames tobacco advertisements and promotion for the rising rate of tobacco addiction.Smoking scenes in films and TV programs, and parents and teachers who smoke have a strong impact on youths as well.

Easy access to tobacco products is also to blame. The three top selling cigarettes in the country are priced under 5 yuan (72 cents). The huge number of low-priced cigarettes could facilitate smoking among youths. In addition, more than 90%of the young smokers have never encountered a shopkeeper's "no" despite the ban on selling tobacco to children under 18.

To break the tobacco marketing chain and better protect youth, the World Health Organization has urged China to totally ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

Laws and regulations have already been enacted to save youths from tobacco addiction, Yang said. The government has taken every possible step to make the Beijing Olympic Games smoke-free, and its efforts won't stop with the end of the Games.

But Zhang Baozhen, deputy director of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration has a different view.As a developing country, China still needs the tobacco industry, because it is one of the main sources of tax.Smoking harms health but a curb on smoking would upset social stability

That, however, is not the whole truth, said Yang."Even highly effective smoking control won't reduce the number of Chinese smokers substantially because of the steady increase in the country's population. That is a long enough time for tobacco firms to shift to new ventures and help sustain the country's tax earnings," she suggested that government functions be separated from tobacco business management.

61.According to the 2008 China Tobacco Control Report, ______of Chinese teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 have tried smoking.

  A.13% B.18% C.68% D.31%

62.The reason why more teenagers are becoming addicted to tobacco in China is that ______

A.there are too much tobacco advertisements and promotion.

B.there haven’t been no laws and regulations made in china

C.there are some easy accesses to tobacco products for the young

  D.Both A and C

63.The deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggest the government should _______

A.ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship

B.forbid tobacco to be sold to the young

C.separate its functions from tobacco business management

D.keep the tobacco industry as one of the main sources of tax.

64.The best title for the passage is _______

A.More kids addicted to tobacco in China

  B.The tobacco industry in China

C.How to break the tobacco marketing chain and protect youth
